Boxers can only attack by striking their opponent with their gloves to the head or body. Punches must land above the belt line, and punches to the back of the head or the neck are illegal. Only hits using the front of the glove are considered legal, while holding, tripping, kicking, or headbutting are also against the rules.
The average ring size varies from sanctioning body to sanctioning body, but it usually ranges between 4.9 and 7.6m squared. In a standard boxing match, the ring is squared off using ropes, which are used for safety to prevent the fighters from falling out of the ring.
Each professional boxing match has three independent judges ringside. The 10-point must system is used to score each round, with 10 points awarded to the winner of the round, while their opponent receives 9 points. However, point deductions can be made for knockdowns or if the referee signals a point deduction due to a foul. It’s also possible for even rounds to be scored 10-10, although this is rare.
If a fight is undecided by a knockout, retirement or disqualification, it goes to the judges’ decision.
A fighter wins if two or more judges score the fight in their favour. If all three judges score the fight one way, a fighter wins by unanimous decision. It can finish a draw if two judges mark the scores level.
